Plumbing & heating service in North Smithfield

North Smithfield is a town of villages strung along the Branch River and Route 146, and the plumbing changes as you move between them. Slatersville, one of the earliest planned mill villages in the country, still has its common, its church and rows of mill-era housing whose pipes and boilers have been renewed several times without the houses ever changing. Forestdale and Union Village carry more of the same. Along Route 146 the town has grown in a different direction entirely: Dowling Village, newer subdivisions off Pound Hill Road and Greenville Road, and houses built in the last twenty years with plumbing that has never been touched. We work in all of it, from the same shop, with the same flat pricing.

District water in the villages, wells beyond them

The village centers and the Route 146 corridor draw on district water. Move out toward Primrose, the Burrillville line or the Massachusetts line at Blackstone and Uxbridge and the houses are on private wells. That decides a surprising amount: what a pressure complaint means, why the hot water is staining the tub, whether a no-water call is a pump or a pipe, and how long a water heater lasts. We ask which you are on before we arrive, and on a well we treat the whole chain, pressure tank, switch, pump and treatment, as one system.

Mill-village housing and what it hides

The older houses in Slatersville and Forestdale were plumbed generations ago and have been patched in every material since: galvanized under the floor, copper above it, sometimes a run of PEX from the last repair. That mix is where pinhole leaks and low pressure come from, and it is why we camera and pressure test before recommending a repipe rather than guessing. Cast iron drains of the same vintage are reaching the end of their lives, and a recurring basement backup in one of these houses is usually the main line telling you so.

Route 146 and the newer construction

The subdivisions off Route 146 have the opposite problem: everything is new enough to be under warranty and nothing has been maintained. Water heaters installed at build are hitting the age where they fail, boilers have never been serviced, and the well systems in the outer developments are on their first pressure tank. This is where a maintenance visit is cheapest, before the first failure rather than after.

Heat: gas where the main reaches, oil where it does not

Natural gas serves the village centers and the commercial stretch of Route 146. Beyond that, the town heats with oil and propane, and the difference shows on a cold night: an oil boiler that quits in a house at the end of a long driveway in Primrose is more urgent than the same failure in Slatersville, because there is no fallback. We service both fuels, we convert oil to gas where a main is available, and we are honest when it is not.

Where our work stops

Water heaters, boilers, drains and sewer lines, fixtures, gas lines, water treatment, well pumps and tanks, and emergency work at any hour. Well drilling and wastewater system design are other trades, and when a North Smithfield job needs one we say so early and hand over what we found, so nobody pays twice for the same diagnosis.

Service by service in North Smithfield

Water heater replacement in North Smithfield

What a North Smithfield water heater has to cope with depends on where the house sits. In Slatersville, Forestdale and along the Route 146 corridor the supply is district water and the sizing conversation is the ordinary one about how many showers overlap. Out toward Primrose, Pound Hill and the Burrillville line the house is on its own well, and iron and low pH come into it, because both shorten a tank's life from the inside. We check which supply you are on before recommending anything, and we quote the replacement flat with the old unit hauled away. More on water heaters.

Boiler repair and heating service in North Smithfield

Slatersville and Forestdale hold a good deal of mill-era housing that has been heating with hot water for a century, and the boilers in those basements have been replaced two or three times over. Natural gas reaches the village centers and the Route 146 corridor; further out it is oil and propane, and a no-heat call on a January night is more urgent when the nearest gas main is miles away. We repair every major brand, and we are certified installers for Navien, Viessmann, Utica and Burnham when replacement is the honest answer. More on boilers and heating.

Drain and sewer service in North Smithfield

The village centers are sewered and the rest of the town is not, so a backup means two different things depending on the street. On a sewered street the question is the lateral or the main; on a private system it is the line to the tank. We camera the line before recommending anything expensive and show you the footage, and where a main line has failed rather than clogged, our sewer crew repairs or replaces it by excavation. More on drain cleaning.

Emergency plumbing in North Smithfield

From West Warwick it is a straight run up 295 and 146, about forty minutes on a normal day, and a live person answers at any hour. Burst pipes, sewage backups, a failed well pump leaving a house with no water, and no heat all jump the queue, and there are no overtime charges. We tell you what to shut off while the van is on the road. More on emergency plumbing.

One town over

North Smithfield sits inside our response ring.

Our shop is at 10 Alpine St in West Warwick, no storefront in North Smithfield, just stocked vans on its streets every week. The map shows every town with a dedicated page; see all service areas.

We cover all of Rhode Island. The lit beacons are towns with their own pages, not the edge of our range, so if a neighboring town is not marked it is still served.

Local questions

North Smithfield asks, we answer.

How fast can you get to North Smithfield?

About forty minutes on a normal run up 295 and 146. No-heat, no-water and emergency calls go to the front of the queue, and whoever answers the phone will tell you what to shut off while the van is on the road.

Is my North Smithfield house on district water or a well?

If you are in Slatersville, Forestdale, Union Village or along Route 146, almost certainly district water. Out toward Primrose, Pound Hill and the town lines, almost certainly a well. Your water bill, or the absence of one, answers it, and it changes how we diagnose pressure, staining and no-water calls.

Do you work on the older houses in Slatersville?

Yes, often. Mill-era housing that has been patched in three generations of pipe is exactly where camera work and pressure testing earn their keep, because guessing in those walls is expensive. We repair what has failed and tell you honestly when a section is due for replacement.

Is natural gas available in North Smithfield?

In the village centers and along Route 146, generally yes. Further out, no. Rhode Island Energy confirms main availability by address, and we check before anyone talks about an oil to gas conversion.

My new-construction water heater just failed. Is that normal?

Unfortunately common. Builder-grade water heaters installed at construction often reach the end of their life around the ten-year mark, and on a well with untreated water it can be sooner. We replace it with a unit sized to the household and, on a well, look at what the water is doing to it.

Do you handle sewer backups in North Smithfield?

Yes. We camera the line to find out whether it is a clog or a failed pipe, clean main lines up to 15 inches, and repair or replace failed sewer lines by excavation. On a private system the line to the tank is ours; the system itself belongs to a wastewater specialist.
