"We called SOS for a leaky fixture, and they were quick to respond. Came right out and replaced gaskets instead of the whole fixture. Another plumber quoted over $1000 before they saw what we needed… we will call them again if we ever need anything."

Garbage Disposal Repair & Replacement in Rhode Island
Garbage disposal repair, replacement and new installation across Rhode Island, from the jam that needs freeing to the unit that has finally quit, quoted flat and done in one visit.
Repair or replace: read the symptom first
A garbage disposal tells you what is wrong with it fairly clearly if you know the language, and reading it right is the difference between a small repair and a replacement you did not need, or a repair on a unit that is already finished.
- It hums but does not spin: the motor is fine and something is jammed against the impellers. Usually a garbage disposal repair, often a quick one.
- Nothing at all, no sound: check the reset button on the bottom of the unit and the breaker before anything else. If it resets and runs, it was overloaded. If it will not reset, the motor may be gone.
- Water leaking from the bottom of the unit: the internal seal has failed and the housing is done. That is a replacement, not a repair, because there is nothing to fix inside a sealed motor.
- Leaking at the sink flange or the dishwasher connection: a repair. The seal or the connection is resealed or replaced and the unit lives on.
- Draining slowly or backing up: usually not the disposal at all but a clog downstream in the drain, which a new disposal will not fix.
- Loud grinding or rattling: something metal in the chamber, or worn impellers. Clear it or, on an old unit, replace it.
What we repair
Jams cleared properly, without damaging the impellers or the flywheel. Reset and electrical faults diagnosed at the unit and its switch. Flange and dishwasher-connection leaks resealed. Splash guards and stoppers replaced. Where a repair is the right answer we say so and do it, and where it is a repair on a unit that will fail again next month, we say that too.
Garbage disposal replacement
A unit with a leaking housing, a dead motor, or ten-plus years and a growing list of complaints is replaced rather than nursed. The replacement is matched to the sink, the drain configuration and the dishwasher, sized to the household rather than to whatever was there, and connected to the existing switched outlet. Where a home has never had a disposal and a switched outlet does not exist, the electrical work is a licensed electrician's job and we say so early rather than improvising.
The install itself is the drain trap and connections done properly, the dishwasher drain connected with a high loop so nothing runs backwards, and the unit run and tested before we pack up. Half the disposal complaints we see trace back to a previous install that skipped one of those.
What not to put down it, honestly
Fibrous vegetables like celery and corn husks wrap the impellers. Grease and oil set in the drain a few feet down. Pasta, rice and potato peels turn to paste. Coffee grounds settle and pack. Bones and fruit pits are harder than the unit. A disposal is for the scraps left on a plate after it has been scraped, and a household that treats it that way rarely calls us about it.
Rentals and multi-family
In a two-family or a rental, a disposal is the appliance most likely to be abused by someone who is not paying for it. We repair and replace them for owners and property managers across the state, and where a unit keeps failing in the same apartment we will tell you plainly whether the answer is a sturdier disposal or no disposal.

Good questions
Asked before every garbage disposals job.
My garbage disposal hums but will not turn. Is it broken?
Usually not. A hum means the motor has power and something is jammed against the impellers. Turn it off, never put a hand in it, and call. Freeing a jam properly without damaging the unit is a quick repair.
Is it worth repairing a garbage disposal or should I replace it?
Jams, flange leaks and dishwasher-connection leaks are worth repairing on almost any unit. Water leaking from the bottom of the housing, or a motor that will not reset, means the unit is finished and replacement is the honest answer. Age tips it too: a unit past ten years with recurring problems is usually better replaced.
Can you install a garbage disposal where there has never been one?
Yes, if a switched outlet exists under the sink. If it does not, adding one is a licensed electrician's work, and we will tell you that up front so the plumbing and electrical are sequenced properly rather than improvised.
Why does my sink still back up after a new disposal?
Because the disposal was never the problem. A slow drain or a backup is almost always a clog downstream in the drain line, and a new disposal grinding into a blocked pipe changes nothing. That is a drain cleaning call, and we will say so rather than sell a disposal.
How long does a garbage disposal replacement take?
Typically under an hour when the plumbing under the sink is in reasonable shape. Corroded drain connections, a mismatched flange or a dishwasher connection that was never done properly add time, and we tell you before starting.
What should never go down a garbage disposal?
Grease and oil, fibrous vegetables, pasta, rice, potato peels, coffee grounds, bones and fruit pits. It is for the scraps left after a plate has been scraped, not a substitute for the trash.
