SOS technicians diagnosing a boiler that has stopped producing heat in a Rhode Island basement

Before you call: two minutes that might save you the call

We would rather you fix it yourself than pay us to flip a switch, so check these first. If none of them is it, call, and tell us what you found.

  • Thermostat: set to heat, set above room temperature, batteries not dead, schedule not holding it low
  • The emergency switch: a red switch plate, often at the top of the basement stairs, that gets knocked off more often than anyone admits
  • The breaker for the boiler, and the service switch on the boiler itself
  • Oil: if you are on oil, check the gauge; a tank that reads low may be empty
  • Lockout light: if the boiler shows a fault or lockout, you may reset it once. If it locks out again, leave it off and call. Repeated resets can hide a dangerous combustion fault and make the eventual repair worse.

What we find on most no-heat calls

The majority of no-heat calls are a single failed part, fixed on the first visit from the stock on the van:

  • Ignition: a failed thermocouple, igniter or flame sensor, the most common cause on gas
  • A frozen condensate line on a high-efficiency boiler, which drains outside and freezes in exactly the weather you need heat, shutting the unit down until it thaws
  • Circulator pump seized or failed, so the boiler fires and the heat never leaves the basement
  • Aquastat, low water cutoff or high limit tripped or failed, the controls that are supposed to protect the boiler doing their job for the wrong reason
  • Zone valves and air: one zone cold while the rest of the house is fine is a valve or an air lock, not a boiler
  • Out of oil, or an oil line that has gelled in the cold

How the call goes

A real person answers, at any hour, and asks what you found in the checks above. The nearest stocked van is dispatched, and you are told the emergency rate on the phone before it moves, so the price is never a surprise on arrival. There are no overtime charges. The technician diagnoses with instruments rather than by swapping parts until something works, fixes what has failed, and runs the system through a full cycle before leaving.

Protecting the house while you wait

Open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls and let a faucet run at a trickle, because the real cost of a no-heat night is not the cold, it is the pipe that freezes in the wall. Space heaters are fine on their own circuit and away from anything that burns. Know where the main water shutoff is before you need it. If a pipe does freeze or burst, that is a second emergency and we handle it on the same visit.

When the fix is a new boiler

Sometimes the no-heat call is the boiler's last one. If the block is cracked or the unit is not worth what it would cost to save, we say so in the basement, talk through temporary heat, and move to a replacement on the fastest honest schedule. Financing is available, so a decision made on a cold night does not have to be made on the cheapest option.

Members first

During peak heating season, maintenance plan members are scheduled ahead of non-members. When the whole state is calling in the same cold snap, that is the difference between tonight and tomorrow. The annual service the plan includes is also the reason most members are not making this call at all.

How a rescue works

From your call to fixed, in four moves.

Signal 01, dispatch

You call. A person answers.

No phone tree, no callback queue. Describe the problem and we dispatch the nearest tech, same-day for most calls, immediately for emergencies.

Signal 02, diagnose

Upfront price before we open a wall.

The tech diagnoses on site, walks you through options, and quotes flat pricing before any work begins. You approve, or you don't. No surprises on the invoice.

Signal 03, fix

Fixed right, left clean.

Stocked vans mean most repairs finish in one visit. We protect floors, wear boot covers, and leave the space cleaner than we found it.

Signal 04, guarantee

Backed in writing.

Workmanship is guaranteed and every tech is licensed and insured in Rhode Island. If something isn't right, we come back. That's the whole policy.

"If you want good hard working honest people, call this company! I've had this company do an excellent job installing a sump pump system with a spare pump and a backup battery… They've always come out quickly when it was an emergency and they price very fair."

Vita M. · Google review

"I had a saddle valve fail at 10pm and couldn't get the drip to stop at the leak. I got an instant and informative call back… Good advice, kind people, solid work and reasonable prices. This is a great company, highly recommended."

Good questions

Asked before every no heat emergency job.

Do you charge extra for nights and weekends?

No. There are no overtime charges. You are told the emergency rate on the phone before a van is dispatched, and it is the same rate at 2 a.m. on a Sunday as at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday.

My boiler keeps locking out. Can I just keep resetting it?

Reset it once. If it locks out again, leave it off and call. A lockout is the boiler protecting itself from a fault, often a combustion fault, and repeatedly overriding that can be dangerous and can turn a small repair into a larger one.

Why does my high-efficiency boiler stop in the coldest weather?

Very often a frozen condensate line. Condensing boilers produce water that drains outside, and that drain can freeze in a hard cold snap, shutting the boiler down until it thaws. It is a quick fix, and a rerouting or heat trace stops it recurring.

One room is cold but the rest of the house is warm. Is that an emergency?

It is a zone valve, a circulator or an air lock rather than a boiler failure, and it is worth a same-day call because a cold room on an outside wall is where pipes freeze. It does not usually need the emergency rate, and we will say so.

How fast can you get here?

It depends on where you are and how many other homes lost heat in the same cold snap. The dispatcher gives you an honest window rather than a hopeful one, and maintenance plan members are scheduled ahead of non-members in peak season.

What if the boiler cannot be repaired tonight?

We tell you that in the basement, not by phone the next day. Temporary heat is discussed before we leave, and replacement moves on the fastest honest schedule with financing available, so the decision does not have to be the cheapest option because it was made on a cold night.

Whatever's leaking, clogged or cold, send the signal.
