SOS hydro jetting trailer set up for a main line sewer cleaning in Rhode Island

Main line sewer cleaning, 3 inch to 15 inch

The size range is the point. A house lateral in Rhode Island is usually 4 inches, sometimes 3 in an older home, sometimes 6 where a large house or a two-family was plumbed generously. Past that you are into the mains that serve apartment buildings, restaurants, schools, mill conversions and small commercial blocks: 8, 10, 12 and 15 inch pipe that a residential drain cable simply flops around inside of. We carry the cable machines and the jetting equipment to clean the whole range, which is why property managers and commercial owners call us for the lines other companies turn down.

How to tell it is the main and not a drain

  • More than one fixture backing up at once, usually the lowest in the building first
  • A floor drain or basement fixture giving back water when something upstairs is used
  • Gurgling from a drain you are not using, as air is pushed back up the branch
  • Sewage odor at a cleanout or floor drain before anything visibly backs up
  • Recurring clogs that clear and come back, which is a partially blocked main, not bad luck

A single slow sink or one sluggish tub is a drain cleaning call. Any of the above is a sewer call, and treating it as a drain problem wastes a visit.

What is usually in the line

Roots find the joints in clay and cast iron and grow into the flow, and they grow back on a schedule. Grease from a kitchen cools and hardens a few feet down the line and closes the pipe a little at a time, which is why restaurant mains want a regular clean rather than an emergency one. Old cast iron sheds scale from the inside until the bore is half what it was. And then there are the wipes, the paper towels and the things that were flushed in a rental unit nobody was watching.

Cable, jetter, or both

A cable machine cuts through roots and breaks up a blockage, and for a root mass or a foreign object it is the right first tool. Hydro jetting is different in kind: high pressure water scours the full circumference of the pipe wall, stripping grease and scale and flushing everything to the main, so the pipe is restored to its real diameter rather than punched through. On a main line that has been slow for years, jetting is the difference between clearing it this month and clearing it for a long time.

Where the line is accessible we camera it after cleaning as well as before, so you can see the pipe wall you paid to have cleaned.

Commercial and multi-family

Restaurants, multi-unit buildings, schools and mixed-use mill buildings have mains that fail expensively and at the worst hour. We clean them on a schedule where the owner wants one, and on an emergency basis when the schedule was skipped. Larger diameter, longer runs and shared responsibility between tenants and owners are all ordinary to us, and we document what we found so the next conversation is about facts.

When cleaning is not the answer

Cleaning restores a pipe that is intact. It cannot fix a collapsed section, an offset joint, a belly holding waste, or a line that has rotted through. The camera tells us which situation we are in, and when it is the second one we say so and point you at repair or replacement rather than selling a cleaning that will need repeating in a month.

How a rescue works

From your call to fixed, in four moves.

Signal 01, dispatch

You call. A person answers.

No phone tree, no callback queue. Describe the problem and we dispatch the nearest tech, same-day for most calls, immediately for emergencies.

Signal 02, diagnose

Upfront price before we open a wall.

The tech diagnoses on site, walks you through options, and quotes flat pricing before any work begins. You approve, or you don't. No surprises on the invoice.

Signal 03, fix

Fixed right, left clean.

Stocked vans mean most repairs finish in one visit. We protect floors, wear boot covers, and leave the space cleaner than we found it.

Signal 04, guarantee

Backed in writing.

Workmanship is guaranteed and every tech is licensed and insured in Rhode Island. If something isn't right, we come back. That's the whole policy.

"If you want good hard working honest people, call this company! I've had this company do an excellent job installing a sump pump system with a spare pump and a backup battery… They've always come out quickly when it was an emergency and they price very fair."

"I had a saddle valve fail at 10pm and couldn't get the drip to stop at the leak. I got an instant and informative call back… Good advice, kind people, solid work and reasonable prices. This is a great company, highly recommended."

Good questions

Asked before every sewer cleaning job.

How much does sewer cleaning cost in Rhode Island?

It depends on the pipe diameter, the access and what is in the line, which is why we quote a flat price once we know those three things rather than an hourly rate that grows. You get the dispatch fee on the phone and the cleaning price before the work starts.

Why does the 3 to 15 inch range matter?

Because most residential drain companies stop at 4 or 6 inches. A commercial main, a multi-family building or a school runs on 8 to 15 inch pipe, and cleaning it needs equipment sized for it. We carry that equipment, so the larger lines are ordinary work rather than a referral.

Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?

In the hands of someone who has camera-inspected the line first, yes. Jetting pressure is matched to the pipe, and a line that is already fractured is identified before jetting rather than discovered by it. That is exactly why the camera comes before the jetter.

How often should a restaurant main be cleaned?

Depends on volume and on how disciplined the kitchen is about grease, but for most busy kitchens a scheduled clean once or twice a year costs far less than one closure on a Saturday night. We can put it on a calendar.

Can you clean the line on a private wastewater system?

Yes, the line from the house to the tank is ours to clean and inspect. The tank and the field are a wastewater specialist's work, and if the camera shows the trouble is past the house line we hand off with the footage.

Will cleaning fix a line that keeps backing up every few months?

Sometimes, if the recurring cause is roots or grease and a proper jetting resets it. Often a line that backs up on a schedule has a structural problem, a belly or an offset, that cleaning cannot cure. The camera settles which, and we will tell you honestly.

Whatever's leaking, clogged or cold, send the signal.
